Can shoplifting be prevented by technology? The Japanese telecom company NTT East believes the answer is a firm yes. In a collaboration with the startup Earth Eyes, the two companies have developed AI Guardsman --- a system that can track every customer in a store and determine whether they are engaged in shoplifting. The system uses computer vision and machine learning to analyze the video stream from security cameras in the store. If it detects a suspicious activity, it alerts security which in turn has to decide whether and how to respond.
